This article covers starting in construction, industry updates, and how to renew or obtain a new CSCS Green Labourers Card if you’ve held one before.

Do I need a CSCS card?

If you work or plan to work on a construction site, you will likely have been asked to provide a CSCS card.
If you have previously held a green labourers card, you will need a Level 1 award in Health and Safety in a Construction Environment and a CITB operatives test to gain a new card. Moreover, you must have taken the CITB operatives test within the last 2 years. Additionally, since 2020, CITB no longer accepts applications for Green Cards without the relevant qualification. Therefore, ensure you meet these updated requirements to apply successfully.

Why do I need a CSCS card?

A CSCS card is proof of your suitability to work safely on a construction site. Every year the Health and Safety Executive releases reports on industry-specific statistics. In the 2023/2024 summary, there has been an increase in injuries on construction sites that have led to deaths. While CSCS cards aren’t legally required, proving you can ensure safety on a construction site is mandatory. If a site doesn’t require CSCS cards, they’ll need stricter measures to prove employees’ knowledge and safety skills.

Do I need a CSCS card if I am not carrying out construction work?

If you’re on-site for non-construction work (see the full exempt list), a CSCS card isn’t required.

Which CSCS card is right for me?

There are many cards available, and, additionally, there are partnerships with other awarding bodies to consider. The type of card you require will depend on the type of qualification you have and the work you need to carry out. Use the CITB card checker to determine your eligible card and the required CITB touchscreen test based on your qualifications.

How do I gain a CSCS Green Labourers Card?

Designed for unskilled workers, the Green Labourers Card allows access to construction sites and is valid for 5 years. To gain a Green Labourers Card, you need to have a Level 1 award in Health and Safety in a Construction Environment. You can find the full list of alternative qualifications here. Once you have sat and passed the Health and Safety Awareness course, along with your CITB touchscreen operatives test, you can apply for your card. Alternatively, we can handle the application for you.

What is a Health and Safety Awareness L1 course?

On this course you can expect to learn about these topics and more:

  • Main health and safety responsibilities of employers and employees
  • Identification of hazards and risks
  • The work environment
  • Accident reporting and first aid
  • Types and use of personal protective equipment

What happens if I fail?

If you attend our Health and Safety Awareness course and fail, you can book one resit for free. If you fail the CITB operatives touchscreen test, you can rebook it at any of our CITB testing centers in Bradford, Hull, or Mexborough for £40 (including VAT and facility fee).

Where can I find the CSCS card mock test?

You can access CITB mock tests via Google search. This option provides free tests; however, it has a limited number, and some sites may be unsafe for your personal details, so choose carefully. Alternatively, download the CITB Ops/Spec app from the Play Store or App Store for a one-time fee of £6.99. This official CITB app offers access to a full list of potential questions for the CITB operatives test.

On the test day, you will answer 50 questions, with a pass mark of 45 correct. Results will show which areas you need to review if you fail.

How to get a CSCS card after passing the test?

Along with your L1 in Health and Safety in Construction and your CITB ID number (found on top of your test score report), GEM can apply for your card. Alternatively, you can apply for one here.
