Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) Adult Course

The total cost to employers of mental ill health among their staff is estimated at nearly £26 billion each year. That is equivalent to £1,035 for every employee in the UK workforce.

Our Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) Adult 2 day course (in association with Sam Leigh of Sleigh Services) teaches people how to identify, understand and help a person who may be developing a mental health problem. In the same way as we learn physical first aid, mental health first aid teaches you how to recognise those crucial warning signs of mental ill health. By learning to recognise the signs that someone may be unwell, you may be able to provide initial help, to guide a person towards appropriate professional help, and in its most powerful form, save a life by learning basic suicide intervention skills.

What will I learn?

MHFA Adult course is split up into 4 manageable chunks. These are:

– What is mental health? (Day 1)

– Suicide (Day 1)

– Anxiety and depression (Day 2)

– Psychosis (Day 2)

In each section you’ll learn how to:

– Spot the early signs of a mental health problem

– Feel confident helping someone experiencing a mental health problem

– Provide help on a first aid basis

– Help prevent someone from hurting themselves or others

– Help stop a mental illness from getting worse

– Help someone recover faster – Guide someone towards the right support

– Reduce the stigma of mental health problems

How will I learn?

The MHFA Adult course takes place over two full days and participants must attend both days.

The sessions will be a mix of presentation, group discussions and group work activities. We provide a very safe learning environment and are trained to support you throughout the whole course. If you don’t feel comfortable joining in certain bits, then don’t, we won’t make you do something you aren’t comfortable with.

Due to some of the sensitive subjects of our courses, including suicide, we limit numbers to 16 people. We want everyone to feel safe and our instructors can help if people find some bits particularly difficult.

You’ll receive a MHFA Adult manual that you can take away with you at the end of the course and also an attendance certificate from MHFA England to say you are now Mental Health First Aider.

Who can attend?

The course is simply for everyone! Some of the contents could be quite sensitive and can be upsetting to some so we would only ask you to register if you are over 16 years old (There is a MHFA Course specially for younger participants). We want to ensure that we create a safe and suitable learning environment for all our attendees.

Those who’ve done the course include: social care professionals, ambulance staff, staff nurse, family members, foster parents, school teachers, HR and line managers and those with lived experience and many more.

What to expect

We limit numbers to 16 people per course so that the instructor can keep people safe and supported while they learn. The day includes a mix of presentations, group discussions and workshop activities. You will get an MHFA manual and workbook to keep and refer to whenever you need it. On completion of the two day course you will receive a certificate to confirm that you are a trained Mental Health First Aider.

Course cost is only £200 plus vat per person
