Apprentice Card

The Red Apprentice card is specifically for people on a recognised apprenticeship.

This card is valid for 4 years and 6 months and cannot be renewed. Cardholders are expected to complete their apprenticeship by the time the card expires and apply for a skilled CSCS card.

All applicants must pass the CITB Health, Safety and Environment test, which can be completed at one of our CITB Test Centres, or:

  • Supply a completion certificate for a one-day Construction Health and Safety Awareness course.
  • Supply a Certificate of Unit Credit showing completion of the Construction Health and Safety unit included in your induction or initial qualification.

CSCS will accept one of the following as proof of registration for an apprenticeship:

    • A letter or email from the Managing Agency of your apprenticeship, confirming which qualifications (with full titles and pathways) you are registered with them for.
    • A letter from your apprenticeship training provider confirming which qualifications (with full titles and pathways) you are registered with them for.
    • Your Apprenticeship Agreement, provided it shows the occupation and qualification (including pathways) you are registered for.
    • A letter from your training provider delivering a programme from the CSCS Approved Apprenticeship Standards list.

Once supplied, you can apply for a free-of-charge Red Apprentice CSCS Card.

Trainee Card

The Red Trainee card is specifically for people who are a trainee and registered to complete a construction related qualification. The qualification may be vocational, academic or professional, but must be acceptable for a skilled CSCS card.

This card is valid for 5 years and cannot be renewed. Cardholders are expected to complete their qualification by the time the card expires and apply for a skilled CSCS card.

All applicants must pass the Operatives CITB Health, Safety and Environment test within the last 2 years, which can be completed at one of our CITB Test Centres.

Trainee card applicants must be able to provide proof of registration onto their qualification. As a minimum, you are required to provide evidence from your University, Professional Body or qualification’s awarding body.

Date of registration proof required for;

  • Vocational Qualifications (i.e. NVQ or SVQ) must be in the last two years.
  • Academic Qualifications (i.e. Degree, HND or HNC) must be in the last four years. This is due to the difference in lengths of time achieving these qualifications.

Industry Placement Card

The Red Industry Placement card is only applicable to those undergoing a construction-related qualification or training programme which requires the completion of a minimum 30 day work placement, such as T-Levels or Trainee Skills Development Programmes.

To be eligible for this card, applicants must:

Important note: GEM cannot currently support with the ECS Health, Safety and Environmental Assessment.

The CITB Health, Safety and Environment test can be completed at one of our CITB Test Centres.

This card is valid for 3 years and cannot be renewed.

If you are a trainee registered to complete a construction-related vocational or academic qualification which is acceptable for a skilled CSCS card upon completion, you should apply for the Trainee card instead.

Trainee card applicants must be able to provide proof of registration onto their qualification. As a minimum, you are required to provide evidence from your University, Professional Body or qualification’s awarding body.


Experienced Worker Card

The Red Experienced Worker card is available specifically for workers with on-the-job experience (normally at least one year in the last three) who are registered to a complete an approved construction related NVQ/SVQ level 2, SVQ at SCQF level 5 or higher.

This card is valid for 1 year and cannot be renewed. Cardholders are expected to complete their qualification by the time the card expires and apply for a skilled CSCS card.

Experienced Worker card applicants must be able to provide proof of registration onto their NVQ/SVQ qualification. As a minimum, you are required to provide evidence from your Training Organisation awarding body that must include:

  • Applicants Name
  • Full qualification title of the NVQ/SVQ course you are registered to, including level

All applicants must pass the CITB Health, Safety and Environment test in the past 2 years, which can be completed at one of our CITB Test Centres. GEM can also support with applying for your Experienced Worker CSCS Card.

The Red Experienced Technical, Supervisor or Manager card is available specifically for workers with on-the-job experience (normally at least one year in the last three) who are registered to a complete an approved construction related Technical, Supervisory or Management (TSM) NVQ/SVQ Level 3, SVQ at SCQF level 6 or higher.

This card is valid for 3 years and cannot be renewed. Cardholders are expected to complete their qualification by the time the card expires and apply for a skilled CSCS card.

Experienced Worker TSM card applicants must be able to provide proof of registration onto their NVQ/SVQ qualification. As a minimum, you are required to provide evidence from your Training Organisation awarding body that must include:

  • Applicants Name
  • Full qualification title of the NVQ/SVQ course you are registered to, including level
  • Date of registration (must be in the last 2 years)
